By this time I am fairly confident everybody has heard all about blu ray technology and what its capable of. However the following couple of lines is for those individuals that have no idea what it is or what its capable of. Blu-Ray technology was released by Sony right when HD DVD was at the pinnacle. At the time all pictures would be released in HD DVD format and most of the people had already acquired HD DVD players. But Sony came along and articulated Blu Ray.
They claim to have much more info capacity and data transference rates than any other format available at the time or any time.
Blu Ray can store 5 to 10 times more info than what the traditional DVD’s can do. However the sole difficulty with this new format is that Sony made it mismatched with all of the players including the existing HD DVD players that were well-liked at the time. Blu-Ray discs can only be played by itself players.
This created a difficulty for HD DVD owners who had already acquired HD DVD players and couldn’t watch flicks that were exclusive to blu-ray. A blu-ray disk looks like every other DVD, having the same size and dimensions. But then if that’s the case then how is it in a position to store so much information? The solution to this lies not in its physical dimensions but in its write / read technology. Blu-Ray uses a blue violet laser having a wavelength of 405 nanometers to read and write info on the disk. This laser is where this technology got its name from. Not like the blu ray, first generation DVD’s and CD’s employ a red laser having a much bigger wavelength to read and write information. It’s usually because of this short wavelength that so much information can be written on a single disk. The shorter wavelength suggests that info can be written more exactly thus leading to higher capacities. A single layer disk can store up to 25 GB of information while a twin layer disk can support up to fifty GB of info. While from another perspective, first generation DVD’s utilise a red laser having a wavelength of 650 nanometers to scribble info. That’s the reason why it can only store 4.7GB on a single layer disk. It is due to this technology that blu ray will ultimately be used as the channel of choice for storage purposes. And as technology advances the cost of a single blu ray dvd will also fall.
And thanks to private blu ray burners this technology is not just available to the film industry but can also be employed by any individual owning a blu ray burner.
